How to Complete the EX15 for NIE Application in Spain

By following these simple,  step by step instructions you will be able to make your own NIE Application in Spain without having to pay a translator or a lawyer …

In order to apply for an NIE in Spain, we currently use the EX15  form shown above.

The above application form has been comlpeted with fictional details for the following person who is applying for NIE not Residency:

  • Name:  Susan Elizabeth Jones
  • Passport Nº(1):   123456789
  • Sex (1) : Female    (please note:  H= Male and M = Female)
  • Date of Birth (2): 1st February 1060 (please note date format)
  • Place of Birth:   Manchester
  • Country of Birth:  United Kingdom
  • Father´s Name:   David
  • Mother´s Name:  Mary
  • Nationality: British      (please note UK is quoted not GB)
  • Marital Status (3):  Divorced  (please note: S = Single, C = Married, V = Widow, D = Divorcee,  Sp = Separated)
  • Address in Spain:  Urb. Las Arenas, Edificio Buganvilla Nº5, Mijas Costa 29649, Malaga.

In this example, Susan Jones is making her own NIE application so he does not need to complete Section 2).

However, she has completed Section 3) as  he does not receive post at her home address so she has requested that all notifications are sent to her post box address. This is a very good option if you regularly move house or your postal service is not reliable.

The above information should allow you to make your own NIE in Spain without having to pay a translator or a lawyer. Remeber that if you require further assistance we offer this service and many more via our   Standard Membership option.

How to Change the Address on your Spanish Car Paperwork

Too many expats in Spain are accumulating  unnecessary and excessive traffic fines due to not having the correct postal address registered with the traffic department nor on their Spanish car paperwork.

This process can be carried out through a gestor for a small fee, or you can do it yourself for free.

Documents needed:  Proof of change of address: Passport, NIE/residency card, current pardon certificate.  If you have not changed municipality, then a water/gas/electric bill will suffice.

Vehicle registration certificate (permiso de circulacion – grey document) and ITV card (ficha tecnica – green document).

You can change your address in your local authority or Provincial Traffic Headquarters. See the link (more…)

NIE Number: Why and How

An NIE number is a “foreigner’s identification number” in Spain. An NIE number is required if you wish to carry out administrative procedures such as opening a bank account, buying a car, setting up a mobile phone contract in Spain etc.

An NIE number is also required to work in Spain, take out private Spanish health insurance and apply for Spanish state health cover.

The Decree (Real Decreto 338-1990) March 9th, establishes that anyone, of whatever nationality, resident or non resident, who has any “official business” in Spain, must have a fiscal number (NIF/NIE).

Does your Spanish NIE expire after 3 months?

In response to the question “Does your Spanish NIE expire after 3 months?”  … The answer is “no”!

Some companies are telling people that their NIE expires after 3 months. This information is not totally true and is very misleading.

As we have previously explained (read the post here) , if you are planning to stay in Spain for more than 3 months then you no longer need to apply for an NIE , you can register as a foreign resident (click here for details how to do this ) , receive the green certificate (which has replaced the old residency cards) and consequently save yourself time and money.

However, if you require an NIE to purchase a property or a car then (more…)

Update January 2012: NIE Application Spain

Due to recent changes to the law in Spain, it is no longer possible for a lawyer to apply for a client’s NIE using a Power of Attorney.

To apply for a NIE in Spain, you must now make the application personally at the corresponding police station.

NIE numbers may still also be applied for at any Spanish Consulate or Embassy, in your home country, (see related post here)  , although this process will take longer, usually between 3 and 4 months, which will delay any planned property completion.

If you are planning to buy property in Spain, (more…)

Healthcare Update: UK Pensioners in Spain

Following on from our post European Health Insurance Card in Spain , we would like to point out that UK Pensioners living in Spain, in receipt of a UK pension, need not apply for the Spanish Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea.

As quoted by the British Embassy “Since 1st May 2010, the UK is responsible for issuing the EHIC to UK pensioners resident in other EU countries.”

European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) are issued by The Pension Service in Newcastle upon Tyne to all UK expats in receipt of a UK pension.

For further information on this subject you may like to visit The NHS website

There is, however,  an exception to this:

If you are in receipt of a UK pension and are actively working in Spain (ie. contributing into the Spanish Social Security system) , you will need to apply for the Tarjeta Sanitari Europea via the method described Here.

If you are unsure about your own personal situation, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.
